Pastel of the 'Rainbow
Houses' on 11th Ave.
2008 Dogwood Arts pastel art competition award winner
Built in the late 1800's these houses were part
of the group of residences on 11th St. and Laurel Ave. referred to
as "The Seven Victorian
Houses". They were later called "the rainbow houses" because
of their exterior color, the houses on 11th St., depicted in the painting
were home to people with a variety of occupations including ministers,
electricians, tinners, coopers, cigar makers, clerks, coal industry
managers, and a saloonkeeper.
Having deteriorated over the years,
many thought the houses would be demolished when preparations began
for the 1982 World’s
Fair. They were purchased, however, by Knoxville's Community Development
Corporation in 1980 and were the target of a $350,000 restoration
project which allowed their use during the fair. Since that time
they have housed a variety of art galleries, a coffeehouse, and other
office and commercial businesses.
Thanks to the efforts of Knox Heritage, these colorful old Victorian
houses are still here today - in their beautiful rainbow colors – for
us to enjoy.
